Synthetic covering materials can be readily found in the market and have, in effect, resolved many problems associated with the various characteristics a safe building must provide, as described above. The limitation of this category of coverings lies in the artificial nature of the elements from which they are constructed, since they are still sheets of colored, shaped cement and not natural stone.
Where the restoration of a historic building of architectural interest requires the use of natural materials, to provide better external appearance and longer duration, the limitations of using natural stone still persist today, because it is more costly and less practical than thin coverings. The purpose of the "Foglie di Pietra" project was thus to overcome the limitations described above inherent in artificial coverings and in "counter-walls" of real stone and to offer a unique system.
